KOTA KINABALU: The electronic government in the State has been progressing steadily since its implementation five years ago and has enhanced the capability of civil servants, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Tham Nyip Shen.

He said since it was established in 1997, a lot of the people had been using the e-government to provide services.

"A lot of people may complain that the process is a bit slow but I say it'sprogressing steadily. It definitely takes a lot of time to get everybody to get used to this e-government," he told the press after launching the Natural History Publication (Borneo) website here yesterday.

"Our electronic government was only established five years ago in 1997 and it will take a bit more time to mature. But I see that a lot of people are using the e-government to provide services which is very good.

"The most important part is we actually enhance the capability of civil servants to use IT to provide services to the Sabah people, and it is a very encouraging sign that we are moving in a right direction," he added.

According to Tham, all the government departments had shifted to the e-government after it was launched in 1997.

"I think all the government departments are already connected since day one, but I would not be able to provide the statistics on how many percent of the services are delivered over the intra-net or Sabah Net which is managed by the-kkip. corn," he said.

Meanwhile, Tham disclosed that the State Secretary's office was now making arrangement to place IT (information technology) under the jurisdiction of his ministry.

"The State Secretary (Datuk KY Mustafa) is now making the arrangement and would make the announcement after everything has
been finalised. .1 hope it will be completed soon," he added.

The IT is now under the Chief Minister's Department. Tham's predecessor Tan Sri Joseph Kurup had complained in the past that the ministry does not have the facility and funding to develop IT in the State.

Speaking at the function earlier, Tham commended Natural History Publication (Borneo) director Datuk C.L. Chan for embarking on e-commerce by setting up a website (developed by IBiz Solutions) on the Internet to promote and sell their products to overseas market.

The e-commerce would solve the many tedious problems that we haveto go through using the conventional method," he pointed out.

Chan said the result had been encouraging as he had started receiving orders, but more importantly the website would enable people from other countries to know more about Sabah through the publication of books about the State.

After his 10 years' works of publishing books on Sabah's natural wonders and history, Chan said he had now ventured into publishing books on Sabah's cultural heritage and tourism products.
